Writing Workshops

3:00pm - 3:45pm PST (45 minutes) for 4th-6th Graders
4:00pm - 4:45pm PST (45 minutes) for 6th-8th Grade
Mondays: The teacher will model how to dissect a prompt, read a text and then analyze it in order to answer the prompt.
Wednesday: The teacher will model how to use the gathered evidence in order to plan, organize, and draft their essay.
Fridays: The teacher model how to edit and revise an essay. If time permits, students will give each other peer feedback to each student.
Analyzing a Single Text
4th-6th Grade or 6th-8th Grade
This class is designed for students who have a foundational knowledge of how to put together an informational multi-paragraph essay with an introduction/opening, body paragraphs and a conclusion/closing.
Goals
Students will learn how to write essays using complex text in order to gather evidence to respond to a prompt.
Students will learn how to analyze a prompt in order to determine what type of essay is to be written and about what topic.
Students will learn how to gather evidence from a text in order to directly respond to a text.
Students will learn how to plan and organize an essay with evidence gathered.
Students will learn how to edit and revise their essays.
Homework
Students will be assigned an essay writing prompt and will be guided through on how to complete planning, organizing and drafting their own essays. Students will be expected to complete the essay drafts on their own after Wednesday's class and should be completed by Friday for peer review if time permits. Teacher will review and give feedback by the end of Sunday.
Other Information
Students will have an opportunity to interact with their peers when analyzing the prompt, finding evidence, creating thinking maps, creating outlines, and during peer editing.
The text will be provided to students who are enrolled in the course so that they may print out or digitally annotate on.
Must have a Google Account in order to create a copy of the writing prompt, respond to essay prompt and get feedback via Google Docs.
Students will not be receiving a letter grade or percentage grade for this course.
